Tree Services Throughout Kelowna & the Central Okanagan

Last updated: February 2026

Quality tree service in the Central Okanagan requires understanding local conditions—terrain, species, wildfire risk, and municipal regulations vary significantly across the region. Our recommended arborist, SISU Tree Care, is based in West Kelowna and serves the entire Central Okanagan from Vernon in the north to Summerland in the south. Below you'll find guides for each area covering local tree care considerations.

Central Okanagan Overview

The Central Okanagan spans diverse terrain from lakefront properties to forested hillsides, each with unique tree care needs:

Urban Areas

Downtown Kelowna, Rutland, and established neighborhoods feature mature street trees, ornamental species, and fruit trees from the region's orchard heritage. Tree work often involves municipal regulations, overhead power lines, and working in tight spaces between homes.

Hillside Communities

Glenmore's Wilden development, Mission hillsides, and West Kelowna bench areas feature challenging terrain with interface forest conditions. Access can be difficult, and FireSmart compliance is often a priority due to wildfire risk.

Rural & Lakefront

Lake Country, Peachland, and Summerland include large acreages, lakefront properties, and agricultural land. Tree work may involve larger equipment, significant debris removal, and managing forest stands rather than individual ornamental trees.

Common Tree Species by Area

  • Ponderosa Pine: Found throughout the region, especially hillsides and interface areas
  • Douglas Fir: Common in higher elevations and north-facing slopes
  • Birch: Popular ornamental in urban and suburban areas
  • Maple: Mature street trees and ornamental plantings
  • Fruit Trees: Apple, cherry, peach, and apricot throughout former orchard lands
  • Cottonwood: Found near water, especially Mission Creek corridor

Regional Considerations

Wildfire Risk

The entire Central Okanagan is classified as high or extreme wildfire risk. FireSmart tree management—removing dead trees, pruning lower branches, creating defensible space—is essential for most properties outside the downtown core.

Mountain Pine Beetle

While the epidemic has subsided, pine beetle continues to affect Ponderosa and lodgepole pines throughout the region. Dead beetle-killed trees are safety and fire hazards requiring removal.

Municipal Regulations

Each municipality has different tree protection bylaws. Kelowna, West Kelowna, Lake Country, Peachland, and Summerland all regulate removal of significant trees. Check with your municipality before removing large trees.
